Projects

An array of projects

For more than 20 years, DCA-VET has implemented a large number of projects to improve livestock health and productivity. Most of these projects offer an integrated package of paravet, BVW and refresher training, and establishment and support of veterinary field units. Besides, close monitoring and extension have always been essential components of the DCA-VET projects.

The network of VFUs has become rather extensive already. Nevertheless there are still provinces where farmers in remote areas cannot rely on animal health care close at hand. As the DCA-VET projects proved to be successful and effective, donors are willing to fund these projects. However, focus is shifting away from paravet training and VFU establishment to enhancing the sustainability of the private animal health services.

Presently, DCA-VET implements five major projects funded by USAID, European Union, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Development Cooperation and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

DCA-VET working area

At present, DCA-VET focuses mainly on improvement of veterinary care in the northern, north-western and central part of Afghanistan. DCA-VET's working area stretches out from Herat and Farah in the north-west up to and including Badakhshan in the north-east of Afghanistan. Besides, DCA-VET is working in the central province of Uruzgan. From July 2010, DCA-VET will undertake a survey in eight provinces in the south and east, to assess the present status of the VFUs, and the needs for additional new VFUs.
